The alarming number of women that do not seek help due to the negative expectation towards moms to be one hundred percent all of the time needs to be addressed.

The Solution

In order to raise awareness of Postpartum Depression, doctors should discuss the severity of PPD while also discussing possible therapies and support groups during every appointment with expectant mothers so that it becomes normalized.

Statistics provided by Jenna Carberg (2021) identified that there are around 900,000 women who go through postpartum depression every year in the U.S. Most of those women never seek help and endure the symptoms alone. Some women lose the battle against postpartum depression and enter into postpartum psychosis. 1 or 2 women out of a thousand commit suicide thus leaving their newborn alone.

Here are charts on the amount of women "baby blues" and postpartum depression effect. Below is a chart describing the many things that could possibly effect postpartum recovery and cause postpartum depression.

This graphic is made with statistics compiled by Zachary Blackhurst.

Determinants of PPD

A great way to help during postpartum depression would be to have wonderful resources such as support groups, a therapist, or family counseling.

  • Support Groups provide the feeling that each mom is no longer alone, gets mom out of the house, and provides a safe place for her to go.
  • One on one therapy sessions can not only be in person but also online thus creating an easy access to help.
  • Family counseling is a great way to get an outsider's opinion to show mom she needs help.

Things that can happen if moms go without knowledge of Postpartum Depression

  • Cause moms to feel isolated which creates depression.
  • Possibly cause postpartum psychosis. This can develop into suicidal thoughts and even homicidal thoughts.
  • Can possibly develop OCD, postpartum anxiety, and a feeling of helplessness.
  • Mom may not connect with baby until months or even years after birth.

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the symptoms listed, please speak up and stay persistent. You could save a life or even two. To the left are symptoms listed that describe postpartum depression so that you too can be aware. Doctors need to step up and make new moms aware of what could happen in the postpartum stage of the birth of their baby.

How doctors should address the importance of recognizing postpartum depression

Conclusion

  • It takes less than five minutes in each session to go over symptoms that may already be occurring.
  • Either the nurse practitioner or the OB can explain information to mom and/or support system in each appointment.
  • Identifying that this does not just effect mom should be stressed in each appointment as well.
