What is Setting?

What is setting?

- The time and place in which a story happens

- The place can be real or imagined

- Depending on the story the setting can be important or unimportant

ex: Romeo and Juliet = Gnomeo and Juliet =West Side Story...

Important vs. Unimportant Settings

Setting as a catalyst

Setting can influence characters in different ways...

- Setting can determine the living condition and jobs/ opportunities available

-Setting can shape a character's personality, dreams, and values

Example:

Setting - A poor, drought stricken Midwestern farm town in the 1930s

Despite months of grueling work, Joe's crops are failing again. Realizing that his life may never improve, he becomes bitter and angry.

Setting as a Symbol

Setting can serve as a symbol ( or have a deeper significance)

- setting can represent an important idea

- setting can represent a character's hopes, future, or current predicament

Example:

Some people have planted a small flower garden in the town square. The garden is a symbol of their hope that their community can still thrive.

Setting as Conflict
