Required cigarette/ tobacco warning labels

3 required tobacco labels

The label must include...

1. that it can cause mouth cancer.

2. that it may cause gum disease and tooth loss.

3. that tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarettes.

Effect on smokers

  • Labels effect has weakened
  • The more labels change, the more they catch peoples attention
  • Labels are weaker in the U.S. due to poor layouts of information (ex: pictures don't show harm)

FDA required labels

The Food and Drug Administration requires the following labels to be provided on all tobacco products:

  • Colored graphics
  • Has to mention that tobacco is "hazordous to your health"
  • Place of business
  • Quantity of item
  • Percentage of tobacco

Lots of other countries include disturbing photos in there labels.The pictures that they wanted to put on the boxes were to cover the upper half of the cigarette box. However , in 2012, a judge ruled that it violated the 1st amendment free speech proetections. This made it so that there was not allowed to be any more visual images on cigarette and tobacco boxes.

What is a warning label

- A warning label is what lets people know that cigarettes and tobacco can cause mouth cancer and other kinds of cancer.

- The warning label is used to reduce the cigarette and tobacco use.

Europe

  • Disturbing pictures
  • Made to look bad
  • Shows how they are harmful

  • Pictures don't show effects of smoking
  • Made to make smoking look somewhat good
  • Don't seem harmful
