Childhood

Childhood

Jesse Owens was born in Oakville, Alabama on September 12, 1913. His dad was a sharecropper, a farmer that rents land. As a child, Owens was sick, often too frail to help his father and siblings out in the fields. His brothers and sisters worked all day and night while Jesse's parents tried to keep him safe and healthy. In 1921, he and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio for better work opportunities. The move to Cleveland allowed him to go to public school. In public school, his teacher accidentally wrote his name as Jesse instead of J. C. which stands for James Cleveland. He ended up just sticking with the name Jesse, which we have all referred to him as from that day forward.
