ARTICLE #1 REVIEW

Rawat 2014

Publish or perish: Where are we heading ?

Issue #1

Frequent publication

-Frequent publication can lower the quality of research

-Most institution focus on professors publication rather than teaching accolades

- There is greater reward for publishing than exceptional teaching

Issue #2

Researchers cut corners

- Unethical practices to get research published

- Salami slicing, same research split into many fragments, and duplicate publication

- Professors sometimes takes credit for research that is not theirs, if it comes from their department

Issue #3

Results from corners being cut

- In 2006 1.3 million peer reviewed scientific journals were published

- This caused a large rise in scientific journals. This number jumped from 16,000 in 2001 to 23,750 by 2006

- Only 42% of the papers received more than one citation and 5-25% are self cited

DISCUSSION

Predatory journals: Who publishes in them and why? (Demir, 2018)

ARTICLE #2 REVIEW

Research Question #3

Research Question #1

Introduction

Introduction

Predatory/Fake Journals (PFJs): Publish quickly with fast or no peer review, may have fake locations or editors, may make false claims of impact, and exist to make a profit from scholars. Linked to "publish or perish" in some studies

Research Questions

1. Using Beall's PFJs list, what are the locations of PFJs?

2. Which countries have researchers that publish most often in PFJs?

3. What are characteristics of the editors in PFJs?

4. What are the reasons that researchers from Turkey publish in PFJs?

*Demir (2018)

Methods

Methods

Sequential Explanatory Mixed-Methods Study (Quantitative Qualitative)

Research Steps

1. Identified all PFJs on Beall's 2017 list on January 4, 2018 (1,099 journals)

2. Found working website of the PFJs (832 journals)

3. Identified country of journal by IP and domain address since location may be inaccurate (735

journals)

4. Identified journal editors from declaration page (653 available)

5. Identified each editor's country from workplace's institutional website

6. After reviewing all articles (24,840) in 832 journals, 22,764 unique researchers were identified that

had the country identified (mostly first-authors since others do not always have a location)

7. Attempted to contact a sample of 2,310 authors from all countries (only 6 responded)

8. Conducted qualitative interview with 16 Turkish authors that published in PFJs

*Demir (2018)

Research Question #1: Location of PFJs (Demir, 2018)

  • Journals located in 55 different countries
  • 62% in India, 19% in developed countries, and 19% in developing countries
  • 119 journals identified a false location

Research Question #2

Research Question #2: Countries of Authors (Demir, 2018)

  • Authors from 146 different countries
  • 15.9% of authors from developed countries; 84.1% from underdeveloped countries
  • 10.4% of authors from India and 3.6% from the United States

Research Question #3: Who are the Editors? (Demir, 2018)

  • Excludes 378 editors from India
  • Editors from 53 different countries
  • 88% have academic appointments at universities

Research Question #4

Research Question #4: Why do authors publish? (Demir, 2018)

CONCLUSIONS

DISCUSSION & LIMITATIONS

  • Increased awareness of characteristics helps prevent unintentional publication
  • Developing country of origin
  • Incorrect country
  • Cannot rely exclusively on indices
  • Changes in how researchers/faculty are incentivized for publications
  • Most authors from countries that provide monetary incentives for publications
  • Reconsider publish or perish
  • Emphasize quality over quantity.

LIMITATIONS

  • Some question the reputability of Beall's lists since it is a blog even though widely accepted
  • Journals skewed towards English journals
  • Qualitative data limited to Turkish authors

Summary

COMPARISON & SUMMARY

Rawat (2014):

  • negative outcomes of Publish or Perish
  • professors are focused more on publications than teaching
  • increase in fraudulent research

Demir (2018):

  • systematic review of known PFJs
  • included interviews with authors
  • provided an international perspective

Similarities

  • Both international articles, neither from the United States

  • Both articles feature single authors

  • Both focus on the influences & negative outcomes of the pressure of publishing (money, professional accolades, etc.)

Differences

Rawat (2014):

  • much shorter article (2 vs. 15 pages); more like an editorial

  • focus on impact on academic professionals, their patients/participants, and their students

  • highlights the issues that Publish or Perish creates: low quality publications and increase in unethical/fraudulent practices

Demir (2018):

  • more focused on the who and why of predatory journals; systematic study

  • included statistical analysis of journals, authors, and editors

  • collected qualitative data, interviews with Turkish authors

Implications for future research

Looking Ahead

  • Developed in 2006 Publish or Perish software retrieves and analyzes academic citations using data sources like Google Scholar or Microsoft Academic Search

  • Analyzes and produces the following metrics:
  • Total number of papers and total number of citations
  • Average citations per paper, citations per author, papers per author, and citations per year
  • Hirsch's h-index and related parameters
  • Egghe's g-index
  • The contemporary h-index
  • Three variations of individual h-indices
  • The average annual increase in the individual h-index
  • The age-weighted citation rate
  • An analysis of the number of authors per paper

  • Available for Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux, free to download
