Most of us know that dinosaurs were very large - look how big they are in movies! - so many people are surprised to learn that dinosaurs hatched from eggs. In fact, dinosaurs are closely related to birds, which also hatch from eggs. Scientists believe that birds are actually the descendants of one kind of dinosaur.
Even though there were millions of dinosaurs, and trillions of dinosaur eggs, we don't know a lot about them. This is because most of the eggs were destroyed when the young dinosaurs hatched. Eggs that didn't hatch may have been crushed by other hatchlings, or baby dinosaurs, by the mother dinosaur, or by predators.
Some nests of unhatched dinosaur eggs have been found, but in most cases, there aren't any unhatched baby dinosaurs, or embryos, left inside the eggs for scientists to study. Dinosaurs died out about 65 million years ago, so any material left inside the eggs has usually been destroyed. Some dinosaur eggs with embryos inside have been found, but these are very rare.
