The half rhyme scheme of ABA increases the sense of claustrophobia in the poem. By the constant rhyme it may be interpreted that the speaker is trapped in a viscious and abusive cycle controlled by her partner which she is unable to escape from.

Language

  • Use of personal pronouns Eg. "And I ate, did what I was told. Didn't even taste it" Although she is following orders set out by her partner, she is still thinking about herself as shown by personal pronouns
  • Use of dialogue shown through the use of italics. He likes "soft girls" emphasising how controlling he is, inferring his want for something that he can shape and control
  • Use of narrative voice for instance through alliteration, assonance and repetition, the speaker conveys the excessiveness of the demands made by her partner

  • Euphanism- "cuddly"-often used to mean fat in a less harsh way

Imagery

  • " I was his Jacuzzi. But he was my cook, my only pleasure was the rush of fast food"- Even though the speaker acknowledges the abusive relationship, she still appreciates the food he provides for her. This could possibly reflect her weakness and instability in contrast to him.
  • Water imagery frequently used- " His desert island after shipwreck. Or a beached whale on a king sized bed craving a wave"
  • Water is submerging and engulfing and can change into whatever shape it needs to- the speaker is described as water.
  • "I was a tidal wave of flesh" - foreshadows the death of her partner since a tidal wave is destructive and cannot be stopped.
