Engineering Design

Intro

Engineering design process

Stage 1

Stage 1: Define

To construct a paper tube platform that will hold a book six inches off the table

stage 2

sTAGE 2: Imagine

Idea 1. Use four tubes and stand them up individually.

Idea 2. Use eight tubes, tape them together in pairs and stand them up.

Idea 3. Use ten tubes, tape them together in two groups of five.

Idea 4. Use _____ tubes and form a square shape.

Idea 5. Use ____ and cross the tubes at an angle

stage 3

StagE 3: Evaluate

I decided to try idea 2 (state what the idea was)

stage 4

Stage 4: Create

Stage 5

Stage 5: Test

Test 1 - I stacked one book on the platform for 20 seconds. My stack held up

OR

Test 1 - I tried to stack one book on the platform but the platform collapsed.

Test 2 - stacked 2 books

Test 3 - stacked 5 books.....

Reflection 1

How did my results compare to the goals I set when defining the problem?

My results did matched my goal. I was able to stack 1 book for 20 seconds.

OR

My results did not match my goal. I was unable to stack 1 book for 20 seconds.

OR

My results did not match my goal. I did not have the supplies I needed.

OR

My results exceeded my goal. I was able to stack 2 books for 20 seconds.

Reflection 2

What Can I learn from this to do better next time?

  • How could my platform be even stronger to hold more books?
  • Do I need to learn more about force, compression, center of mass, stability?

Reflection 3

What new problems have i discovered?

  • Did I waste resources?
  • Did I need to use as much tape as I did?
  • Did I make my tubes larger than the pencil-size requirement which caused me to use more paper?
