MODALS

A modal has only one form for all persons of the verb.

A modal verb is also known as a helping verb.

It gives additional information about the main verb that follows it.

Summary of modals

Ability: Can, Could.

Permission: May, Can, Could.

Requests: Will, Can, Would, Could.

Advice: Should.

Suggestions: Could.

No Choice: Must not, Can not.

Expectations: Should.

Future Possibility: May, Might, Could.

Assumptions: May, Might, Could, Must.

Suggestion

Necessity

You really must talk to your boss about as rise.

Strong need not to do something
