Murder

Murdered

Roberta "Bobbie" Miller was found dead in her home at 123 Country Club Ln, Gilford NH, on November 1st, 2010 by her adult son Jonathan Miller. Lying in the kitchen was the body of her dog Scout, who had also been killed. It was determined she had died the night before and that the cause of death was determined to be several shotgun blasts that perforated Miller's carotid artery, brain, and lungs. There was no murder weapon, and there was no signs of forced entry into the home.

Suspect Profile

  • The killer used a shotgun, which is loud, powerful, and usually messy
  • No signs of forced entry indicate that she probably new her killer, or that they had somehow convinced her to let them inside the house
  • There were never reports of any evidence of sexual abuse, which indicates the crime was likely not sexually motivated
  • There was $26,000 in the home at the time of the murder but nothing was reported stolen, so it probably wasn't a burglary gone wrong
  • The killer also murdered the dog, which means they could have had a deep hatred for the victim

Suspect Profile

New Hampshire Crimes

Case Progress

Unfortunately, this case is still unsolved. The case was almost immediately transferred to Major Crimes, due to the lack of preparation for crimes of this nature. The police have been extremely tight lipped, and haven't released an official statement with new information regarding the case since Late 2010.

NHMC

New Hampshire Major Crimes

Despite being one of the smaller states in the country, New Hampshire is largely unsuccessful when it comes to solving major crimes and disappearances. Likely the poorly funded police precincts, mixed with the dense wooded terrain are to blame for New Hampshire's inability to handle major cases. Miller's case is still considered open, but at this point it is listed as one of New Hampshire's 100+ unsolved murders and disappearances. However since it is still technically open, police won't release information regarding the case, evidence, or even suspects. Although an unsolved case isn't necessarily rare, it is surprising that the police have not revealed anything since essentially the time of the murder. Since 2007, there have only been 3 recorded homicides in Meredith NH, and in all the crime history of Sandwich NH, there has never been a recorded murder.

The Theory

The Suspect

The interesting part about an unsolved case is that I can make my own assumptions based on the limited information the police have released, and based on the nature of the crime. To be clear: This theory is mine, and police have said nothing to indicate this person in the murder. Again, there is little information given by the police to the public, which doesn't leave a wide range of possible suspects to choose from. Lets meet my prime person of interest, Gary Miller.

Gary Miller

  • Gary and Roberta Miller got married in 1981. Gary ran a successful car dealership in Wolfeboro New Hampshire, A Ford dealership in Sanford Maine, as well as a tire company based in Tamworth NH
  • The couple lived in Wolfeboro for many years and had two children, who were grown at the time of the murder
  • On September 19th, 2007 the couple filed for divorce after 26 years
  • The divorce proceedings were long and complicated, and according to some sources it was an extremely unhappy process for both parties
  • The divorce proceedings finally ended in August of 2010, three months before the murder

Suspicious Activities

The Fire

The Fire

  • On October 28th, 2010, a man in Acton Maine reported a large house fire
  • The house on fire was a large cabin that belonged to Gary Miller, and had been rewarded to him during the divorce proceedings
  • The flames appeared to be somewhat sandy colored, and the house burned to a skeleton extremely fast
  • The Acton Fire Chief determined that the house was intentionally set ablaze, ruling it an arson
  • No one has ever been arrested in connection with the fire that burned the lakeside home of Gary Miller, just three days before his ex-wife's murder

A Messy Divorce

  • The couple filed for divorce in 2007 and cited "irreconcilable differences", which could possibly indicate an affair of some sort took place.
  • Over the course of the divorce proceedings, Gary Miller had to sell ALL of his successful companies in order to pay restitution and alimony to Bobbie Miller
  • Gary had to liquidate his assets, and give almost half of his money to Roberta, his now ex-wife, which totaled $928,051
  • In 2009, Gary Miller took Roberta Miller to court to argue that she hadn't paid $74,000 in taxes owed to him as part of their settlement. Bobbie had no job and claimed she had run out of money and couldn't pay him
  • However records show that Bobbie had spent $100,000 on legal fees, and $110,000 in personal taxes. That leaves over $700,000 unaccounted for, despite her claims
  • Gary Miller had gone from a successful married businessman with assets worth over $1.3 million, to a single man with nothing going for him ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to his ex-wife

Messy Divorce

Conclusion

Police have never ruled Gary Miller in or out as a suspect. One of the most common motives for murder no matter where you look is money. Gary Miller could have had a significant motive to end Bobbie's life. He was likely still the beneficiary for any life insurance money that would come from Bobbie's death, and who knows what Gary Miller's financial status could have been after the long and convoluted divorce.

Crime scene evidence points to a personal attack, performed by someone who would have known the victim well enough to get in the door. Gary Miller unfortunately fits the suspect profile to a T. Gary Miller would've lived about 35 minutes away from Bobbie Miller's house at the time. Additionally, since Bobbie was murdered on Halloween night, a figure walking around with a mask and gun likely wouldn't have turned too many heads. Some of Bobbie's friends reported that she was acting fearful for her life prior to her untimely death. Bobbie Miller's son Jonathan Miller reported that she had given him and his sister a letter detailing what to do if she(Bobbie) ever died.

Finally, there are still so many questions involving Gary Miller. Could Gary Miller have set his own house on fire in order to collect insurance money? If so, why kill Bobbie for presumably more insurance money? Was the insurance payout put on hold until they discovered who had committed the arson? The more questions I get answered about Roberta, the more questions I have about Gary Miller.

Alternate Theories

  • Did Bobbie Miller find out who burned her ex-husband's cabin, and she had to be silenced?
  • During the divorce, Gary had to shut down at least three automotive businesses, putting at least 50 people out of work during what would have been the worst economic times in decades. Did an ex-employee of Gary Miller blame Bobbie for the divorce that put them out of the job?

QUESTIONS?

  • Was Gary Miller ever tested for gunshot residue?
  • What was Gary Miller’s alibi? Why wasn't it released to the public?
  • What was Gary Miller’s financial status at the time of the murder?
  • Was there a history of spousal abuse?
