By: Anahi Garcia

Physical Contamination

Physical contanimation happens when objects get into food. Contaminants can be naturally occuring from accidents and mistakes.

Common physical contaminants include:

  • Metal shaving
  • Glass from broken light bulbs
  • Finger nails, hair and bandages
  • Jewelry
  • Fruit pits

Finger nails

Finger nails

  • A physical contaminant is anything that can be seen and if it's not part of the food originally.

  • An example for that is finger nails in food, that holds lots of bacteria and dirt.

  • Food handlers definitely don't want that to happen.

Preventions

Preventions

  • Physical contamination can be prevented by always having short clean nails.
  • Avoid wearing fake nails as these can fall off and may contaminate the food.
  • Most physical contamination can be prevented by inspecting food, practicing food personal hygiene, and following preparations.
  • Another good prevention would be no nail polish.

Summary

I've learned many things about the three types of contamination in food. Which are Chemical, Physical, and Biological. All foods are at risk of being contaminated which increases the chance of people getting sick. Its extremely important how you can contaminate your own food and know how to prevent it. With physical contamination the objects have the ability too injure someone and it can carry serious biological contaminants.

Summary

Theres other consequences due to physcial contamination like having an angry customer after finding out they had an object in their food. That's the worst thing you could do for the food that your serving to the person. Objects like finger nails, hair, band aids thats the last thing you would like to find in your meal.
