the meaning of each item

GUM- Scout finds two pieces of chewing gum in the knothole. She immediately runs home chewing it. She enjoys the minor luxury. it also is supposed to represent her and Jem's dual relationship.

OLD WATCH- Scout got the old watch from the knothole where boo left all these artifacts for the kids to take. The watch obviously symbolizes the passage of time , especially with Atticus , and his pride in his southern heritage and family as the watch is passed from one generation to the next . This continues when Atticus gives Jem the watch , a `` coming of age '' moment in the novel.

SOAP CARVINGS- Scout found the soap dolls in the knothole with the other gifts boo had left them. The soap dolls are intricately crafted figures of Jem and Scout, which reveal Boo's talent and fascination with the Finch children. Boo probably thought that the children would enjoy having miniatures dolls of themselves, which is why he took his time crafting them.

INDIAN HEAD PENNIES- scout and jem find them in the knothole. These penies are valuable for good luck and they show jem's good and humble characteristics.

BALL OF TWINE- Scout and her brother find twine in the knothole with other items. they think it is boo leaving them secret messages/they think he is communicating with them. Scout has some sort of connection with the twone that boo knows she will appreciate.

SPELLING BEE MEDAL- Scout found this in the knothole. This is significant to Scout because she was really good and reading and writing and miss caroline did not like that when scout went to school. Scout really enjoyed the thought of going to school because she might have fun.
