- Rhythmic body slapping to accompany a loud chant

Who Performs it

-Usually performed in a group

- Some can only be performed by men

- Some can be performed with males and females

-Non-maori are welcome but it is important to respect the culture

- The Haka is taught and learned

When it's Used

When

- Ceremonial maori war dance or challenge

- Battlefield to prepare warriors mentally and physically for battle

- When two parties met as part of the customs around encounters

- When groups came together in peace

- Challenge opponents on sports field
