Water, also known as H2O is a transparent and colourless chemical substance that is the most essential factor on earth as we use it in our everday life. Water creates seas, lakes, rivers, and rain. Water is a main resource used in our life because water is in our bodies and without water the earth wouldn't be a planet as earth needs water to live. Water comes in many forms; rain, sleet, or snow.
Water cycles from the ocean, which then evaporates into the atmosphere, then falls back as rain water.
In Brampton, our drinking water comes from one of three sources: Lake Ontario, A regionally owned well and/or a private well. The region of peel always makes sure we have safe drinking water. The region of peel owns two large treatment facilities. A treatment facility is a large place where they clean and filter the water from large water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and seas.
Lakeview and Lorne Park Water Treatment Facilities
The Lakeview Water Treatment Facility provides clean water to the eastern parts of Missisauga and Brampton and the community of Bolton. The LWTF is located in Lake Ontario. The Lorne Park Water Treatment Facility provides clean water to the western parts of Missisauga and Brampton, and is located in the north shore of Lake Ontario. In these facilities there are many big machines that treat the lake water, so when it gets to your house, the water comes clean. The first step is Coagulation where the dirt particles in the lake water turns into a one big particle so it is easier to take out during filtration. The second step is Sedimentation where the water moves slowly in a sdimentation basin so the large dirt particles go to the bottom. The third step is Filtration where particles in the water is removed by a filter machine. The fourth step is Chlorination and Fluoridation where they add Chlorine and Fluoride so that the water is drinkable.
If your house is connected to a sewer system, your wastewater drains into large pipes which then the water goes to the underground sewer system until it reaches the either the Lakeview or Lorne Park Water Treatment Facility. After the water reaches there, the facility cleans the water and cycles back to your house as clean water.
If your house isn't connected to a sewer system, all the wastewater goes into a septic tank. Then all that water goes into a leach field, pipes buried underground that have holes in the bottom. The water drains out of these holes and go underground.
