The Theory of plate tectonics explains the movement of plates and talks about how the earth's crust has movement.

Theory

The Theory of Plate Tectonics expresses that the earth's crust is broken into pieces. These pieces move up to 2-10 centimeters a year. These plates are like a shell to the mantle. There are nine major plates: North American, Pacific, Eurasian, African, Indo-Australian, Australian, Indian, South American and Antarctic. This theory also supports the possibility of the continental drift.

Plates

North American, Pacific, Eurasian, African, Indo-Australian, Australian, Indian, South American and Antarctic are the major plates that exist. Ocean plates consist of Philippine plate, Pacific plate, Juan de Fuca plate, Nazca plate and many more. All these plates move and can create faults and natural disasters.

Pangaea is a theory that all the continents used to be connected and joined in a super continent. Then the continental drift, movement of the plates, started separating the land into what we today know as our continents

The movement in the plates must be caused by something, but what is that something? It's called convection.

The convection in the earth's mantle drives the movement of the plates. The heat that rises and sinks slowly moves the plates. The magma is the most responsible for the heat in the mantle of the earth.

The heat that helps move the plates didn't come from no where. They were created deep in the mantle from radioactive decay that creates the magma that heats up the mantle and interior of the earth

Where two plates meet and bump into each other one of the plates goes under the other and melts into the mantle

Boundaries and Faults

The places where two plates meet are called faults and boundaries. They can have many effects the earth and its features.

Convergent

A boundary where two plates push each other resulting in one going under the other. Oceanic plates going under the continental plates is called "subduction". Convergent boundaries can create volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Transform

Transform

A boundary where two plates slide past each other. This can cause earthquakes and tsunamis. The plates grind and slowly pulverize each other. As they slide past each other the plates also end up cracking and breaking.

Divergent

A boundary where two plates move away from each other allowing magma to rise up from the gap created. Helps create more crust. These boundaries can also cause geysers to form near them.

Faults

Faults are where two plates meet. There are different faults and one of the most known fault is the San Andreas Fault. It's in California which is why is has a lot of earthquakes

Earthquakes are caused after pressure and cracks in the plates and the earthquakes can cause distress in the ocean by moving water and creating giant waves and tsunamis.
