Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is the exclusive provider of electricity and water services in Dubai. DEWA was formed in 1992 following the merger of the Dubai Electricity Company and the Dubai Water Department which had been operational independently since 1959. DEWA’s 9,700 employees do their best to manage the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and water across the emirate.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also a field of study which tries to make computers "smart". ... As machines become increasingly capable, mental faculties once thought to require intelligence are removed from the definition.
Because of its ability to analyze and handle a large amount of data, Artificial intelligence is a viable technology for water asset management. It is used by many countries around the world to maintain their quality in water supply as well as water treatment.
Data-driven water management is now meeting artificial intelligence to fundamentally change the way of ensuring clean water for all

Nahla, contains prerecorded solutions and instructions based on all aspects of the behavior of a waste water treatment plant in order to support operational decision making or detect anomalous behavior. It can make decisions based on this information to manage the waste water efficiently and automate regular procedures involved in the treatment of waste water to improve the quality of treatment and reduce the amount of toxic waste that prevail in the even after treatment due to inefficiency.
This software will be able to take unbiased and highly informed decisions based on the large amounts of data provided which includes all possible problems and emergencies that could occur along with a detailed plan on how to overcome them with the least damage or loss. This will lead to a variety of benefits related to the efficiency of water treatment, management of plants and even quick recognition and management of accidents.
Although initial investment and work related to recording information will be high, loss due to inefficiency and accidents will be exponentially decreased along with better and regular maintenance of the plant.

Coordinating Combined Sewer discharges for avoiding Combined Sewer Overflow during rainy periods. By sharing certain non-sensitive information between industries in a basin or city, it could be possible to coordinate discharges avoiding overflow and reducing pumping cost. It helps coordinate water withdrawals.
We intend to deploy sensor networks and remote actuators for optimizing leak detection The combination of sensor networks and AI could also help manage water in cities. This can be done by forecasting water demands and supply.
Having an extended and comprehensive network of sensors could help identify and control non-revenue water and in cities with restricted water availability to manage the pressure and flows according to demand.
Nahla also predicts the quality of the water leaving from the water utilities. The quality of the water is analyzed in the context of environmental permissions and terms.
Wastewater collection and treatment systems through to the use of computer control and optimization.
Could benefit from many energy saving measures.
Avoids overflow and reduces pumping cost.
Helps cities with restricted water availability to manage the pressure and flows according to demand.
Works towards preventing water contamination and reduces pollution.
Improves the day-to-day operations at water utilities, preventing any surprises and optimizing the current usage of the facilities.
Initial Investment
Viability
Installation involves a huge investment expenditure, which can be covered easily by spreading the expenditure over few accounting years.
The following factors should be considered when assessing project financial viability risk:
Net Profit Margin Ratio (%) will show a better analytical figure, with the intervention of this newly developed app, MILO - the sales of the company are likely to increase, owing to a rise in its Revenue from Operations and hence an increase in the profit margin.
Fixed Asset Turnover Ratio (%) also shows an increment as there is an increase in the asset (the app, MILO) and subsequent rise in the Net Profit in a greater proportion. Indicating that the company is effectively utilizing its latest capital investment.
The royalty and Value of Goodwill will also rise. The success of this project will lead to DEWA being engraved in the hearts of its users.
In October 2017, the UAE Government launched ‘UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI)’. This marks the post-mobile government phase which will rely on various future services, sectors and infrastructure projects. Our plan complies with this strategy and will greatly help the country achieve its goals regarding AI, making it extremely probable to receive massive support from the UAE government in the execution of this plan.
In January 2012, Sheikh Mohammed launched the Green Economy initiative under the slogan: A green economy for sustainable development. Under this initiative, the UAE seeks to become a global hub and a successful model of the new green economy, to enhance the country's competitiveness and sustainability and preserve its environment for future generations. Our AI improves the efficiency of sewage plants and greatly contributes in proper treatment of toxic wastes, complying with UAE’s plan for a sustainable future.
The economy of UAE is quite stable and provides a favourable economic environment for an AI venture despite a slowdown in its growth rate. The AI software will require a large investment which can be assisted by the UAE government. However, this investment will soon become extremely profitable as the AI will result in efficient maintenance, proper treatment of wastes, etc. which can greatly lower the cost of running the plants.
Society, along with the government, is putting greater emphasis on sustainable development and a greener economy. Incorporating this software into DEWA’s working will attain them greater goodwill among society and will set an international example for sustainable development.
The sewage plants will be equipped with cutting edge technology which improves their effectiveness and efficiency. The software will give automated machines instructions and manage their functioning while looking for any emergencies which are recorded into the software in order to prevent any stoppage of functioning of the plant due to accidents.
The government of UAE have laws that favour and foster Artificial Intelligence so incorporating AI will be an easier task which will be encouraged by the government. Since DEWA is under the direct control of the government, it will be easier to install the software and get it running due to help from the government.
Benefit
The wastewater plant will greatly impact environment by perpetuating efficient treatment of waste and thus preventing the death of aquatic life, degradation of water supplies etc. widespread use of this technology can make the dream of rapid industrial development without damaging the environment come true.
Weakness
Threats
Opportunities
As Artificial Intelligence progresses we aspire to incorporate these elements in order to create a more efficient and effective water treatment system.
Through the Nahla project we intend to ensure safety of our water bodies and proper & faster working of waste water management with methods to prevent rare but dangerous cases of combined sewer overflow.
