Communism vs. Democracy

Communism

Overview

First developed by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels

Aims to replace private property and a profit-based economy with public ownership and communal control of productions and the natural resources of a society

Aims to produce a society without class divisions

The production and distribution of goods is based on the principle “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”

The countries that claim to be communist are China, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and Cuba

There have been countries that are close to communist societies but do not meet what Communism is as defined by Vladimir Lenin and Karl Marx

Leninism: a way of thinking about how the communist party should be organized- dictatorship of the proletariat

Marxism: split into two classes that are the workers and the richer capitalists who exploit the workers. When class conflict arises, workers revolt and take control of the ownership of the businesses and materials, and it results in communism- a stateless, classless, society

Similarities

There are not many similarities between communism and capitalism.

Both systems tend to look at individuals as economic units

They are economic philosophies that focus on how the surplus will be allocated in a particular society.

In a true democracy, there isn’t supposed to be separations by class, just like in communism

Difference

Differences

In a capitalist democratic society there is the lower class, middle class, and the upper class. All of these classes depend on how much money you make. However in a communist society there are no classes, everybody is a boss and their own employee. In a communist society there is no private property, however in a democratic society private property is permitted. In a democratic society decisions are made by the people but in a communist society the decisions are made by the government. In a democratic society you can practice whatever religion you would like however in a communist society everyone is atheist.
