Let's learn more

Even though dolphins spend their lives in the water, they are not fish, but are mammals. Dolphins can't breathe water like fish, but need to come to the surface to breath air. Female dolphins give birth to live babies.

How do they live?

Dolphins are very social animals. Many dolphins travel in groups called pods. Some dolphins, live in pods of 5-30 members, while pods can group together to make giant pods as large as 1000 or more dolphins! Dolphins that live in the same pods protect each other . Pods are like a family.

What do they eat?

For the most part, dolphins eat other smaller fish, but they eat squid, too. Bigger dolphins, like the Killer Whale, often eat small sea mammals like seals and penguins! Dolphins are amazing hunters. They work together in teams and use lots of smart tricks to grab their food.

How do they move?

Dolphins swim using their strong tails. They can steer themselves using their fins. Dolphins also breathe air through a hold on the tops of their heads. It is called a blowhole
