'New Boy' and 'Othello'

Meta Narrative

As a metanarrative...

'New Boy'

‘New Boy’ is an amazing novel about a young black boy who is new to an all white school, whose named Osei Kokote. He faces harsh racism throughout the novel as well as the theme of betrayal. He meets a young girl called Dee on his first day and becomes friends with her and her group. A boy in that group called Ian, doesn’t like their relationship and decides to break them up by manipulating the other children. At the end of the book, Ian ends up making Dee and Osei betray each other.

'Othello'

‘Othello’ is an astonishing novel about a black man who’s an army general named Othello and is married to a white woman named Desdemona. In this story the characters battle jealousy and betrayal. For Othello he also faces racism consistently throughout. The reason for the battles are due to Iago, a mischievous, malicious man who longs for Othello and Desdemona marriage to be broken, Iago goes too far multiple times and stops at nothing for their marriage to be doomed. Iago manipulates countless amounts of characters to get his way via betrayal and jealousy. In the end, the jealousy and betrayal encourages Othello to kill his wife Desdemona. Othello then realizes that Iago deceives him the whole time. The guilt arises within Othello and kills himself.

These are examples of a meta narrative, because it shows the “big picture” and gives the context, meaning and purpose.

'Othello' and 'New Boy'

As an Archetype and Context narrative:

Archetype & Context

'Othello':

Othello married to Desdemona. Iago, malicious, longs for their marriage to be broken. Iago manipulates characters and Othello kills Desdemona because of jealousy and betrayal created by Iago. Othello guilt drives him to suicide.

'New Boy':

New boy meets girl named Dee. A mean boy named Ian, dislikes relationship, breaks them up via manipulation/betrayal.

This in an example of Archetype and Context, because its a story we tell over and over and that we can connect our wishes, values and fears with, as well as context due to that it relates to the outside world and provides within the story the historical, political, social and personal context. This applies heavily towards the narrative of ‘New Boy’ due to that Chevalier involves each of those contexts into her narrative. For example, the political context is important to the narrative because of the racism issues that is continuous throughout the story, as well as the historical context is also important, due to that the racism issues was major in the 1970’s, thus why she has made the story set in the 70’s. Finally Chevalier adds her own personal context into the story based on her personal experience since she based the characters age at around her age at the time in the 70’s. Her personal experience of her time at school, of being the only white person in an all black school also shapes the narrative a lot.

'Othello' and 'New Boy':

as a micro narrative:

Micro

Narrative

'Othello":

Jealousy.

'New Boy':

Betrayal.

This is an example of a micro narrative since it’s a stand alone word that sums up the story in one word.
