The Purpose

Paul went to Jerusalem to meet with and share his message with the leaders in Jerusalem

Response

1

"They added nothing to my message"

v. 6

  • The "pillars" didn't think Paul's message was missing anything
  • The message Paul was sharing was understood to be the same as the one they were sharing

2

"...they recognized that I had been entrusted the task of preaching the gospel..." v. 7

  • they believed that Paul was called to preach the gospel to the gentiles (the uncircumcised)
  • He was sharing the same message as but trying to reach a different audience

3

"... gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship..." v.9

  • The "right hand of fellowship" was not just a handshake between friends but an official agreement between Paul, Barnabas, and "the Pillars"
  • This would be kind of like an ordination service in modern terms
  • NOTE: Paul didn't feel that he needed this but it did help OTHERS to accept his ministry

Taking a Stand

"When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned."

v. 11

What Was the Problem?

What Was the Problem?

  • Peter had been spending time with the Gentiles and eating with them, which would have been forbidden by Jewish law
  • When more conservative Jewish Christians (judaizers) showed up he separated himself from the Gentiles out of fear of them
  • Others, including Barnabas, were influenced by this

Paul's Responsibility

Paul's Responsibility

  • As someone who understood the problem and it's impact on others Paul felt that it was necessary to confront Peter about the situation.
  • "I opposed him to his face" v. 11 (not behind his back to other people)
  • "I said to Cephas in front of them all..." v. 14 (this situation seems to have called for a public rebuke)

Lessons to Learn

Lessons to Learn

From Peter: Be aware of how your actions are influencing those around you. Be firm in your convictions, not wavering.

From Paul: Be bold in your faith. Take a stand when necessary.

Remember that Paul and Peter were both Christians.
