Zhan Haite

background

In China there is a hukou policy. The huku policy is a document in China that clarifies

that you are a resident of the place that you are in. In China you are supposed to go to school were you are said to be under the hukou policy.

Background

how Zhan Haite was affected

Zhan Haite moved form Jiangxi China to Shanghai China in 2002. In Shanghai she went to kindergarten, primary school and middle school. Yet she was told she could not take the national college entrance exam in Shanghai that is needed to get in to high school, as she was not a permanent resident. She was told that she should take the exam back in Jiangxi where opportunities are scarce. She thought that this was vary unfair and that all children should have the right to go to school no matter were they are in the country. She decided to protest, out side of Shanghai's education burea. She also spoke out online. At the protest her dad was arrested for starting a fight with another man but was soon released. After that she decided to teach her self what she would have lerned in high school and go to college in Indianan. In the end all she wanted was equality as she once said. "My idols are Martin Luther King and Aung San Suu Kyi. Both paid a heavy price in the pursuit of equality, freedom and democracy,"
