Civil Rights Bill
In the video, Senator Udall tells you about the civil rights bill which is perhaps the most important accomplishment of Dennis Chavez. It took place in 1944. He introduced the senate bill, which would later be callled "the civil rights bill", which would prohibite discrimnation in employment. This bill, which would protect people from discrimnation based on race, religion, national origin, etc... has contributed to society, in some small ways, in some huge ways. The "civil rights bill" came into effect in 1964. when it became law. It gives all people equal employment opprutunities, not just the citizens of New Mexico but the entire nation. Most notable was his work for civil rights which would it not have been for the groundwork of Dennis Chavez. people would not have the protections the civil rights bill contains. Dennis Chavez did accomplish many other things but the civil rights bill is most important to this day.

Dennis Chavez's real name is Dionisio Chavez.
He was born on April 8, 1888. and died November 18, 1962.
Chavez was the third of eight children to parents David and Paz Chavez.
He dropped out of school in the seventh grade and was self taught by going to the library in the evenings. He mostly read about politics.
Dennis delivered groceries on a wagon at the age of 13 to help support his family.
The United States postal service issued a stamp in 1991 honoring the first American born Hispanic senator, Dennis Chavez.
