Arts Integration is a research-based curricular strategy and has been utilized in classrooms for more than 30 years.
When arts integration takes place within core subject classrooms, teachers can
present complex lessons that bridge multiple subject areas and encourage critical thinking skills.
"Arts integration puts creative inquiry at the forefront of teaching and learning, not in a casual way, but explicitly." (Cornett, 2015).
"In arts integration, the arts are an avenue through which students apply and connect the previously taught content. The arts are not servicing the content. Instead, both the content area and the arts area are interconnected." (Riley, n.d).

“From 2011 to 2014, the average improvement in math proficiency across our schools was 22.5 percent, and reading proficiency improved by 12.6 percent,” reports John Abodeely, deputy director of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities Turnaround Arts Initiative.
According to Fiske (1999), the arts have
been linked to higher levels of motivation and engagement, as well as positive attitudes
that contribute to improved academic achievement.
In an examination of three years of state tests in English/language arts and math, evaluators found a steady increase in the percent of students identified as proficient and adavnced at arts-based ABC schools, as compared with schools with similar student profiles (Horowitz, 2004).
Overall, the use of arts integration leads to rich lessons that help students to connect ideas
through meaningful activities and utilization of their strengths and creativity.
