Role of woman in Pakistan

Women´s day march in Karachi in 2019

1. quote

"I was a girl in a land where rifles are fired in celebration of a son, while daughters are hidden away behind a curtain, their role in life simply to prepare food and give birth to children."( p.9,ll.7-11)

Meaning:

  • People are not treated because of their achievements but their sexis
  • Females are treated as a shame
  • Their life has a fix plan: cooking and giving birth

Women have no chance to show themselves but have to support the "more valuable" sex

2. quote

"Zia brought in laws which reduced a woman`s evidence in court to count for only half that of a man´s." (p.24,ll.18-19)

Meaning:

  • Woman are not able to give evidence
  • Woman are less worth than man

Women do not count as a full person, not only for the people but also for the state

3. quote

"My headmistress Maryam was a strong, educated woman but in our society she could not live on her own and come to work. She had to be living with a husband, brother or parents. In Pakistan when woman say they want independence, people think this means we don´t want to obey our fathers, brothers or husbands. But it does not mean that. It means we want to make decisions for ourselves. We want to be free to go to school or to go to work" (p.183 ll.17-23).

Meaning:

  • In Pakistan, it does not matter what you achieve and who you are, if you are a woman you are not free.
  • Women are not able to live alone and need men to live
  • Woman want to decide about their lives
  • Woman do not want to be dependent

Meaning:

  • In Pakistan, it does not count who you are and what you achieve.
  • If you are a woman, you will never be free
  • Woman what to decide about their lives
  • Woman are week and need men to be able to live

Woman just want to be seen as fully adequate people

opinion

Here in Germany we discuss problems like the gender pay gab or if we need a quota for woman but if we solve these problems, we did a great job but the problem that woman are generally disadvantaged allover the world is not solved at all. Women like Malala and men like her father are fighting for nothing more and nothing less than that each and every woman and girl are treated like fully adequated people and that woman are allowed to life alone and to decide what they want to do.

conclusion

conclusion/impressions

It is hard to say that I liked the book because it is a disgusting and violent one. It is not fun to read Malala´s story and Pakistan´s history.

The situation of woman, the missing education and the Taliban, which are the three main topics, are shocking.

Never the less this book is a very good overview about these topics and at least makes the reader understand how serious the Situation especially in the Middle East is, how lucky people like us are and that we have to find a wax to support people like Malala to improve so many lives all around the world.
