BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER

BY: TORIANNA TUCKER

BPD is catergorized as a Cluster B personality disorder.

BPD is a mental illness that significantly impacts the person's abililty to regulate their emotions.

An Overview of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

People with BPD feel emotions very intensely and for long periods of time. It is much harder for them to become stable after being triggered by an emotional event (Butcher et al, 2014).

The cause of BPD isn't completly understood. Researchers agree that it is a mixture of elements such as genetics, brain function, and enviromental factors (Butcher et al, 2014).

Symptoms and causes of BPD

The idea of 'borderline personality' was suggested by Adolf Stern in 1938. He used the idea of 'borderline, because the behaviors he observed 'bordered' between psychosis and neurosis (Tyrer et al. 2019).

The psychological term "borderline personality' was not accepted until 1980 and this is when it was included in the DSM III (Al-Alem & Omar, 2008).

History of BPD

As decades have passed, the treatment for BPD has changed dramatically. These changes has made the recovery process improve considerably (Gunderson, 2011).

The current treatment options for BPD are hospitalization, psychotherapy (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Mentalization Based Therapy), pharmacotherapy (antipsychotics and mood stabilizers), family interventions, and group therapies (Gunderson, 2011).
