What are the qualities of a dystopian novel?

A dystopian novel is a fictional story where there is a lot of suffering or injustice in the world or society. Most of the time these stories are set in post-apocalyptic or totalitarian environments. In post-apocalyptic environments there may be no laws and people could live in a state of constant fear. In a totalitarian people in that society may be under constant surveillance and live in a dehumanized state.

1984

Summary of 1984

1984 Pop Culture References

When 1984 was written, in 1949, it was about the future. In the book we meet a man named Winston Smith who was fighting against oppression in Oceania, the citizens of Oceania are being watched by Big-Brother, which I assume is some type of government in this world, Winston is fighting to be with the girl he wants to be with, Julia.

1984 Pop Culture Refrences

The novel 1984 has been referenced in alot of popular media such as...

  • Near the end of Bedazzled (1967), when Stanley, the character played by Dudley Moore, who has been transformed into a nun, is shown his private room at the convent, he sees a poster above his bed. On the poster is a photograph of Peter Cook, also dressed as a nun, under which reads the caption, "Big Sister Is Watching You."
  • George Lucas's THX 1138 is loosely inspired by , with an underground civilization under heavily surveillance and by containing any form of emotion, including, but not limited to, love.
  • Terry Gilliam's Brazil draws heavily from , adding large amounts of dark humour and visual metaphors.
  • In Hackers (1995), the character Emmanuel Goldstein says, "1984? That's a typo. Orwell is here now, livin' large. We have no names, no names, man, we are nameless..."
  • Me and the big guy (1999) is a comedic short film that satires the relationship between Winston and Big Brother by portraying its main character, Citizen 43275-B, entirely grateful of the Revolution and treating his telescreen as if it were his own best friend.

The novel 1984 is referenced to a great extent in a lot of popular media despite its' old age. It has been referenced in may popular video game titles such as Batman: Arkham City, Fallout 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Bioshock, and Half Life 2.

  • In the game Batman: Arkham City there are signs that force authority in Arkham asylum. one of these signs makes Hugo Strange look like Big Brother, and if you turn Arkham city's symbol upside down it looks very similar to Ingso

Who is Marie Lu

Marie Lu is the author of legend and many other books. Born in 1984, Marie Luwas born in Wuxi, Jigansu, China. She then moved to Beijing. In 1989 Marie Lu and her parents immigrated to Texas during the Tianamen Square protest. The Tianamen Square protest is about workers against inflation and the decay of welfare. At first there were several groups protesting this, and then they all joined together to protest this cause. At the height of the protest there were nearly 1 million people in the square protesting this. The whole protest sounds like a dystopian novel in the making.

Legend

A novel by Marie Lu

Legend is a novel that is based during a time of chaos, there is a government that is controlling everyone, while there is a war happening and a plague all happening at the same time. While there is all of this happening there is a young man named Day, he is a rebel who is fighting against the Reoublic but isnt apart of the other country that the republic is fighting. Day has a interisting history, his dad used to work on the warfront cleaning up bodies but one time he left and never came back, not long after that he has to go and take a test where if he passes he lives, if he doesnt he dies, end the end he failed it and "died" but he gets a suprise when he wakes up surrounded by dead bodies, for the next year or two he is a rebel running around stopping the Republic, and then after that year or two is up is when Legend takes place.

Legend Pop Culture References

Legend doesn't have many pop culture references, in fact it only has one that I could find, not a lot of people talk about it even though there has been over 3 million copies sold but, the refrence is from when Marie Lu was making the book and she would give small sneak peaks of it, and this went on until a month or two after it was released.
