The bed and breakfast is very close to the monument: the castles of Edinburgh, for convenience we chose this because the first day we land we go to visit it because it is very beautiful and it is a light and not tired thing

History

In the castle

The cliffs of the castle are the reason for existence of the Edinburgh Castle.

This rocky hill was the perfect place to defend the castle from invading armies, passed by that route to move from central Scotland to England.

VISIT

In the castle you can visit:

  • the Castle Esplanade where there is a fantastic view of the city to the south.
  • The One O'Clock Gun (a cannon from the Second World War) fires a deafening blow every day exept sundays at one o'clock
  • St Margaret's Chapel is the chapel that was bulit by David I or Alexander I around the 1130 in memory of their mother, the queen Margaret.
  • Mons Meg is a big cannon fired last time in the 1681, for the future england king's birthday, and it exploded.
  • Prisons of War Exhibition are the dungeons that were uset for soldiers captured duing the American War of Indipendence and the Napoleonic Wars.

Calton Hill is a hill located in the centre of Edinburgh, home to a popular public park. The hill has been designated a "site of scientific Interest" and contains many architectural elements of historical and touristic interest. The archaeological evidence, in fact, testify that the hill was already inhabited since the Bronze Age.

In this street you can visit:

- the Museum of Edinburgh;

- the John Knox' House;

- the Writers Museum;

- the St Giles Cathedral;

- and at the end the Holyrood Palace.

The Royal Mile is the popular name for a succession of streets that cut the old town of Edinburgh and links the castle to Holyrood Palace.

This is a road that cuts the old city in two and connects the two most important monuments of Edinburgh.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of His Majesty who spends a few weeks here at the beginning of the summer.

Visit

The Royal Botanical Garden of Edinburgh is an important scientific research center for the Study of plants and their biodiversity and at the same time is also a popular tourist attraction.

This garden captures the imagination of everyone who visit. there are over 70 acres of beautiful landscape to explore, providing a tranquil haven just one mile from the city center. The spectacular Glasshouses are home to 3,000 exotic plants from around the world.

St Giles Cathedral

John Knox' House

St Giles' Cathedral, is the principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Its distinctive crown steeple is a prominent feature of the city skyline.

The church has been one of Edinburgh's religious focal points for approximately 900 years.

John Knox House, is a historic house in Edinburgh, Scotland, reputed to have been owned and lived in by Protestant reformer John Knox during the 16th century.

Initially the house, built for the first time in 1490, was built with a beautiful gallery of wood and hand-painted ceiling.

The visitor's pamphlet states that the house "was Knox's home only for a few months during the siege of Edinburgh Castle, but it is believed that he died here.
