Digestive System Travel Brochure

By Alyssa Hernandez and Emma Gibilterra

Welcome

Welcome, we will be taking a tour through the fascinating digestive system!

Our first stop is going to be the mouth! You will notice that ingestion of foods occur through the mouth, as well as mechanical digestion.

Mouth

In the mouth you will find teeth which break down the food you put into your mouth. This is the mechanical digestion in the digestion process.

You can also find saliva which contains Amylase enzymes. These enzymes break down starches and turn them into monosaccharides and disaccarides so be careful!

Our next stop is the pharynx. Many also call this stop the throat. The pharynx is the pathway in which food goes through from the mouth to the esopgagus. In the pharynx you will also find the epiglottis which is a flap that prevents food from entering the windpipe and the lungs.

Pharynx

From the pharynx we will go straight to the esophagus, in here peristalsis takes place. This is when the muscles in the esophagus constrict and relax, proplusion occurs pushing us straight to our next stop..

Esophagus

Now to our most famous stop of the tour, the stomach! Theres alot to see in the stomach. This muscular organ secretes acid and enzymes that digest food. The absorption of food also occurs in this organ. This is also where the chemical digestion of the digestion process occurs.

Stomach

HCL

The acid chemical HCL kills all harmful pathogens that shouldnt be in the body. Hydrocloric acid is in dilute form in the gastric juices in the stomach.

Pepsin

Pepsinogen becomes pepsin with the help of HCL. This pepsin is the chief digestive enzyme in the stomach. It breaks down proteins into polypeptides.

Our fifth stop is the accessory organs. These organs include the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Bile plays a role in these organs.

Accessory organs

Gallbladder and Liver

The gallbladder is a small hollow organ.

The liver is a big organ that lies on the right side of the belly.

Bile

Bile is an enzyme that was made from the liver, but lives in the gallbladder. The gallbladder distriputes the bile to the small intestine to absorb nutrients, we can call this chemical digestion.

The pancreas distributes enzymes to the small intestines and stomach. These enzymes are pepsin, lipase and amylase.

Pancreas

Our next stop is the small intestine. This realeases nutrients that goes to the bloodstream. The inner wall of the small intestine is covered by tiny projections called villi which increase the total area for absorption. Fun fact: The small intestine in 20 feet long!

Small intestine

Now, we move on to the large intestine. This large intestine consists of waste. When this waste is discharged from the body that is called defecation. This intestine consists of four parts: cecum, colon, rectum and anus. These parts each play a significant role in the large intestine. The cecum recieves chyme from the ileum.

Large intestine

The rectum is our last stop of our tour! The rectum, colon, and anus remove the waste from the body.

conclusion

This will conclude our tour of the digestive system! I really hope you enjoyed and will visit again soon!
