Warren

Character Trait #1

Naive

"Enter Mary Warren. She is seventeen, a subservient, naive, lonely girl."

She is easily influenced. In Act I, she is very obedient, listening to whatever John Proctor says. However, in Act II, after returning from the court, she becomes convinced that witchcraft is occurring. She does not obey Proctor now, and she gives her allegiance to the court.

Character Trait #2

Hysterical

"What's got her? Abby, she's going to die! It's a sin to conjure, and we-"

She is very nervous about what is going to happen to her. She thinks that they're all going to get caught. She also seems to be that only girl worried about Betty.

Theme

R

Hysteria

A major theme in The Crucible is the part that hysteria can play in tearing apart a community. Hysteria gives people the idea that their neighbors and friends are communing with the devil, killing babies, ect. Hysteria stops daily life and allows people to acti out of every dark desire and hateful urge, under the cover of righteousness.

Y

"Abigail: Why-? (She gulps.) Why do you come, yellow bird?"

The yellow bird is a symbol. Yellow is symbolic of disease/illness and envy.

Symbolism in the book

"Proctor: It is your poppet, is it not? ... Hale: Mary Warren, a needle have been found inside this poppet ."

A poppet is a dol used in vudu that is supposed to be a reresentative of a living person. They allow you to "hurt" the doll in any way possible. Whatever you do to the doll is supposed to happen to the person it represents.
