The red huapo, also known as red uácari, is characterized above all by its reddish face free of hair.
They live in trees, in areas that
are periodically swamped, and feed on fruits, seeds, insects and small animals.
During the day they roam in small groups in search of food, but to sleep at night all the members of the herd gather together, which usually consists of about 50 individuals.
ACCORDING TO A STUDY CARRIED OUT IN BRAZIL, AMAZONAS FONTE BOAN.
THEY MATE BETWEEN OCTOBER AND MAY.
FEMALES CAUSE EVERY 2 YEARS, GENERALLY 1 ONLY CRIA.
WHEN THE FEMALE ATTRACTS THE MALE USING OLFACTORY STIMULI.
FEEDING:
They feed on seeds, fruits, leaves, flowers and some insects and live in the treetops of the swampy areas of the Amazon, in Brazil and Peru.
The red HUAPO normally lives from fifteen to twenty
years, but these days its future is threatened and it is in danger of extinction.
It is an arboreal species that lives mainly in the flooded forest of the Amazon Basin.
They live in groups of 5 to 55 members that
cover an area of up to 600 hectares.
They mate between October and May, when the female attracts the male using olfactory stimuli.
Females conceive at intervals of two years and generally give birth to one calf, which is weaned between 3 and 5 months of age.
It is considered a vulnerable species, since a population decline of
at least 30% is calculated in the last 30 years due to hunting and
habitat loss. Between 1980 and 1990, an average of 154 million
hectares of tropical forest per year is estimated in the Amazon.
The timber industry is the activity that contributes the most to
this destruction, which normally implies the loss of continuity of
the tree canopy. This directly affects the lifestyle of the UACARIS
due to their arboreal habits and their diet based on seeds.
Additionally, the populations of CARCAJAO CALVUS are located
mainly in the Amazon River bed, which increases the risk of being
hunted, to be used as a source of food or as bait.
It is a highly specialized species found in a narrow range of
geographic distribution, with the largest known populations
having been identified near the mouth of the YAVARI MIRIN River,
on the border of Peru and Brazil.
Its bright red face is an indicator
of good health, reflecting a balanced diet of seeds, fruits, flowers,
and insects.
They live in family groups, although the males tend to leave them to start their own groups.

It is a victim of poachers, who use it as food or simple bait and, worse
still, of the activities of the logging industry that is taking away its
natural habitat.
