A good thesis statement must
- be specific, clear and narrow
- be relevant to the topic
- make a claim
- tell how the argument will be presented
A thesis statement should NOT be
- an announcement (e.g.In this essay, I will discuss...)
- a factual statement (e.g. This poem was written in 1899.)
- a broad statement (e.g. This poem talks about freedom.)
