What does a thesis statement do?

  • It presents your topic.
  • It informs the readers of the central message or main point of your essay.
  • It guides your writing.

Where should you write your thesis statement?

At the end of your introduction.

What makes a good thesis statement?

A good thesis statement must

  • be specific, clear and narrow
  • be relevant to the topic
  • make a claim
  • tell how the argument will be presented

A thesis statement should NOT be

  • an announcement (e.g.In this essay, I will discuss...)
  • a factual statement (e.g. This poem was written in 1899.)
  • a broad statement (e.g. This poem talks about freedom.)
