Classroom Overlook:

Take a look into 9th & 10th Grade

  • I took a look into a small ENL class.
  • There were 6 students overall
  • There are 4 freshmen and 2 sophomores
  • Students are all male
  • Freshmen are entering and Sophomores are emerging
  • This is a small period class that these students have input into their schedule
  • The students have been in the country for one year or over than a year
  • All students are from Dominican Republic

Activities in Class

Lesson Plan

  • The Unit is identifying characteristics
  • Lesson: Family and how they define themselves and other people ; a description of people
  • Worksheets in spanish and english
  • Power point Slides for students to be able to visually see what the teacher is saying
  • The also have workbooks that they do activities in class with
  • The teacher beings class with a question on the board which reads : Do you think 40 years old is a old age? He also wrote this question is spanish

Let's Get Real

Class Structure

  • The Students love to fool around while the teacher is presenting work for them
  • They lose focus during the class
  • They are ashamed to read out aloud since they still have a hard time reading english
  • The sophomores like to read out loud and write a little more
  • The freshmen still fool around and pretend the teacher is talking to them
  • The students speak in their home language in the classroom
  • Teacher has a hard time to bring their attention to class
  • Both sophomores should be taking the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test in May and ready to move up
  • The freshmen still need some time

My Opinion

My Thoughts

  • The Classroom is very small so each student gets a great amount of attention
  • The students tend to lose a lot of focus on their work
  • Each student requires different help, and I would say the teacher does make time for each student personal needs

Questions:

Questions:

  • How does the teacher promote a positive classroom environment?
  • Materials and assignments are leveled to their understanding of English
  • Multiple entry points of learning
  • Ample wait/processing time when waiting for an answer

  • How do you the teacher demonstrate mutual respect, rapport, responsiveness to students with varied needs and backgrounds and challenge students to engage in learning?
  • Patience - learning a new language is not easy - at the beginning of the year, I inform of the students that it is okay to be nervous and uncomfortable when learning a new language. The teacher would not never judge their progress, or make fun of their mistakes.
  • The teacher teaches in a number of their classes, and makes sure that they know that the teacher role is to help them in language acquisition

Conclusion

Conclusion

Overall The class was well taught. It was my first time in a ENl classroom, and the teacher applied a lot of different strategies in the classroom. The teacher did correct the students when they used the wrong word in a sentence, and also pointed out to fix sentences The students do not feel discourage but feel that their teacher is improving their English. The class overall was very welcoming, and warm. Around the classroom the teacher has display the students work and how they have improved

Work On:

Improvement

  • The Teacher can improve on doing more hands on activities to get the students active. Even though the students are not as young, but the students do not like to sit down all of the class period.
  • As well as alternate materials for high level students.
