Virtual Circuit Approach is:

> Connection Oriented Switching

> Path is fixed for duration of a logical connection

> Preplanned route is established before the messages are sent

> Call request and call accept packets are used to establish the connection between sender and receiver

Datagram Approach is:

> Connectionless Switching

> Path is not fixed

> Intermediate nodes takes routing decision to forward the packets

> Datagram contains destination information and intermediary devices uses this information to forward datagrams to right destination

Switching: is process to forward packets coming in from one port to a port leading towards the destination.

When we have multiple devices. Connecting them together (to make one-to-one connection) is one of the difficult task

Switching mainely used to send private message/data without any data wastage

Switch can easily identifies that which device is connected with which port by using MAC address

that's why

it delivered message on the particular destination machine

Yes, There are many solutions like:

-> Making point-to-point connection between pair of devices (mesh topology)

-> Or Between Central devices and every other device (star topology)

-> etc...

But

these methods are also impractical and wasteful when applied to every large networks

One better solution is "SWITCHING"

Message switching, Message is transferred as a complete unit and forwarded using store and forward mechanisam at the intermediary node
