A network is set of connected devices
When we have multiple devices. Connecting them together (to make one-to-one connection) is one of the difficult task
Switching mainely used to send private message/data without any data wastage
Switch can easily identifies that which device is connected with which port by using MAC address
that's why
it delivered message on the particular destination machine
Yes, There are many solutions like:
-> Making point-to-point connection between pair of devices (mesh topology)
-> Or Between Central devices and every other device (star topology)
-> etc...
But
these methods are also impractical and wasteful when applied to every large networks
One better solution is "SWITCHING"
Message switching, Message is transferred as a complete unit and forwarded using store and forward mechanisam at the intermediary node

with every port host is connected
When we want to send any private message or data to any host.
Using MAC Address switch can easily sends data

Switch creates a table and store MAC address of hosts (Both sender and receiver)
