  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among Middle School and High School students ages 12-18
  • The number of suicides for children ages 10-14 has more than doubled since 2006.

SUICIDE

  • Every day, an average of 3,703 young people ages 9-12 attempt suicide.
  • More teens and young adults die from suicide than cancer, heart disease, aids, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease COMBINED!

  • About 20%, 1 in 5 students ages 12-18 experience bullying nationwide.
  • 46% of bullied students report the incident to an adult at school.
  • School based Bullying Prevention Programs decreased bullying by up to 25%

BULLYING

  • A higher percentage of males than females report being physically bullied, 6% vs. 4%
  • A higher percentage of females than males report being bullied by rumors, 18% vs. 9% or purposely excluded, 7% vs. 4%.
  • Students who are bullied have an increased risk of depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, lower academic achievement, and of dropping out of school.
  • Cyberbullying is highest among Middle School Students.
  • The percentage of individuals who experience cyberbullying at some point in their lives more than doubled from 2007-2019. 18% to 37%

  • 15% of students ages 12-18 report experiencing bullying online of through text messages.
  • Individuals from 12-20 years of age consume about 1/10 of all alcohol consumed in the United States even though the legal drinking age is 21.
  • Alcohol, Marijuana, and Tobacco are most commonly used by adolescents.
  • By 12th grade, 2/3 of students have tried alcohol.
  • 1/2 of 9th-12th grade students report using Marijuana
  • 4 in 10 High School students have tried cigarettes.

Drug & Alcohol Abuse

  • Drug and Alcohol Abuse can lead to other risky behaviors such as sex and driving while intoxicated. There is also an increased chance of being an addict and continuing to use substances later in life.

  • Children of color are more likely to experience poverty than white children:

POVERTY AND HUNGER

  • About 40% of American children will spend at least 1 year living in poverty before age 18.
  • 1 in 6 children do not know where their next meal is coming from.
  • 45 million Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for food each month.

  • 46% of parents have not discussed sexual peer pressure with their children.
  • 63% of young women feel peer pressure to dress a certain way.

  • 23% of teen girls feel peer pressure to have sex.

PEER PRESSURE
