Green Schools 2023

What is 'Fast Fashion'?

WHAT IS FAST FASHION?

Here's a place for the first part of your presentation. And to the right, there are subsections for more specific detail.

Fast Fashion is a HUGE part of climate change- the fashion industry is the most polluting industry after oil.

Of course, this is hidden from view. Fast Fashion hides behind cheap, cheerful, colourful clothing. But you don't have to buy it! Part of this presentation is about what YOU can do to make a difference. We hope you enjoy it!

Impacts

What Are The Effects Of Fast Fashion ?

Here's a place for the fourth part of your presentation. And to the right, there are subsections for more specific detail.

One of the huge things is not only how these clothes are made, but what often happens to them afterwards. In a year, around 92 million tonnes of textiles (fabrics and clothes) end up in landfills.

Something you might not expect is how much clothing dye is poured into lakes and rivers - we're talking about this sort of thing.

Energy

How Much ENERGY?

Can you imagine turning on a light and letting it run straight for 100 hours? Well, that's how much energy it takes to make a single pair of jeans. A good tip to save water, is to wash jeans after about 5-10 wears depending on what type of jeans you have.

Worker's Rights

What It's Like In A SweatShop

Most sweatshops are in Bangledesh and China. Life sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

Workers in sweatshops get paid very very little- under the minimum wage infact. This girl to the right got only 60 c for making all those clothes..

Sweatshops are where most of the world's clothes are made; mainly in South America and Asia. The conditions in these places are terrible. Infections spread quickly and easily, deadly accidents are common. Why would any one want to work in a sweatshop? Although the conditions are horrible, most of these people can't get a job anywhere else. In a single sweatshop there are around 300+ people in one tiny room! Children as young as 6 have been found working in sweatshops for up to 16 hours per day. Sometimes they are paid less than 20 cents per day or about one cent per hour.

Saving money and the enviroment!

What You can do to help

Even though it might be surprising, there's actually a lot you can do to help. And if everyone did these little things it would make a big difference.

  • Shop at charity shops! It's eco friendly, cheap and the money goes to a good cause

  • Wear clothes for a long time. If they get torn, mend them, if you outgrow them, pass them down or donate them to charity

  • Try not to shop at chainstores. Shops like Penneys, H&M and Next use sweatshops and non sustainable methods.

Green Schools are holding a charity clothes sale in June! Everyone is invited (including family and friends) to donate outgrown clothes (clean and undamaged please!). Great value clothes, and all money raised will be donated to charities- and you can help us choose which ones!
