Before Shawn's death, Will was a normal fifteen year old boy. He was really close to his older brother, and looked up to him.
EVIDENCE: "He would tell me about girls, and I would tell him about pretend girls, who he pretended were real, too, just to make me feel good" (Reynolds 43).
Will would talk to Shawn about the things a normal teenage boy would talk about. He made up girls just to relate to him, and just to talk to him. Before Shawn died they had a close, normal brother relationship.
EVIDENCE: “I stuck the cannon in the waistband in the back of my jeans, the handle sticking out like a steel tail” (Reynolds 66).
Will is hiding Shawn’s gun in his shirt in order to successfully kill Riggs, who he believes killed his brother. This shows that he is deeply affected by Shawn’s death and wants revenge.
Will explains that he has never even held a gun before. He feels guilty when he sees his mother crying in the kitchen, but still continues to put the pistol under his pillow. The idea of No. 3: Revenge from the Rules takes over this guilt. He stays determined to kill the killer of who he loves.
EVIDENCE: "I has never held a gun. Never even touched one"(59).
"My mother, stumbling to the bathroom, her sobs leading the way"(60).
"Riggs and Shawn were so-called freinds, but
...
The worst thing he ever did for Shawn was shoot him"(52).
Walking into the elevators, Will was confident that he has what it takes to revive his brother’s legacy and bring justice to his name. But, as he see a ghost of Shawn’s friend Buck, passion is limited.
EVIDENCE: “Buck finally let go / and I stumbled into the corner, / slamming against the wall / like a clown. / You don’t got it in you” (pg106)
This shows that Will does not have the strength to continue with his plan, as he cannot even win in a play fight. These words of discouragement spoken by Buck also show his lack of strength both mentally and physically.
