Binary Oppositions in Streetcar

Binary Oppositions in Streetcar

His theory can be utilised in 'Streetcar' as there are umpteen numbers of binary oppositions in the text, some of which are :

1)Masculinity v Femininity

2) Birth v Death

3) North v South / Old v New

These binary oppositions correlate to a certain extent in the play through Stanley and Blanche as for:

Stanley represents masculinity and Blanche represents Feminity, Stanley is the North/the new generation of America hence symbolising the 'birth' of a new America, a new culture and outlook on life, whereas, Blanche is the 'Southern Belle' who's portraying the dying southern roots and values through the destruction of her character, she is the old American culture/ the demolished South

MASCULINITY V FEMINITY

Stanley's initial description represents the idea of 'Masculinity' in Streetcar, he is labelled with characteristics of an "animal"
