The American Dream

By: Madison Graney

Citation:

Keefe, Mike. "American Pipe Dream." intoon.com. 13 April 2012

Symbolism

This cartoon shows symbolism by the use of a treasure chest and a ball and chain attached to the man. This shows that credit card dept and under employment can drag you down, and make it not possible to have your American dream.

Exaggeration

The cartoonist uses exaggeration by showing that this family is physically climbing up a mountain that represents their struggle to reach their American dream. Another use of exaggeration is the weights tied to their backs to represent the dept that they are in.

Irony

Irony

Irony is used in this cartoon when the cartoonist says, "The American pipe dream with attached mirage.." This shows a family climbing up a mountain to reach their American dream, and as they are climbing what they are seeing turns out to be a mirage, which means seeing something that is not actually there, and in this case it is their American Dream of having a house and two cars.

Conclusion

The cartoonist of this cartoon does a good job showing that today's idea of the American dream can be hard to obtain. With credit card debt, student loans, and under employment, it can really weigh down on people, and make their dreams impossible.
