Ronald Ryan

About Ronald Ryan

  • Ronald Ryan was the last man to suffer capital punishment in Australia

  • Born on the 21st of February, 1925 in Carlton, Melbourne

  • Ronald was hung by execution on the 3rd of February, 1967

  • Ronald had been accused of shooting a prison guard, George Hodson. After escaping with a prison mate, Peter walker.

  • Ronald suffered a tough upbringing

  • Many people believed Ronald was innocent, the protestors of this helped end capital punishment in Victoria

  • Ryan had denied shooting the officer, although witnesses stated he was the shooter

Jean Lee

  • Jean Lee is the last female to be executed legally in Australia.

  • Jean lee was born on the 10th of December 1919 in NSW. She was executed on the 19th of February, 1951.

  • Jean had struggled to make ends meet during her late teens resulting in illegal activity.

  • In 1949 she travelled to Melbourne with David Clayton who had just been released from Gaol.

  • When in Melbourne the two became friends with Norman Andrews. The three teamed up and tortured a bookmaker to find out where he hides his money.

  • The police later found the bookmaker, William Kent, murdered in the front room of his house

- As of 2014, 50 countries are still authorizing firing squad as a form of capital punishment

- Utah is the only state in America to still use firing squad

- In America only 3 executions have been conducted through firing squad since 1976

- Firing squad was not a form of capital punishment used in Australia

- As of 2010, America is the only country that still authorizes lethal gas as a form of capital punishment

- 5 states of America can still authorize lethal gas, some of thse being arizona, california and missouri

- In America only 11 executions have been conducted through Lethal gas since 1976

- Lethal gas was not a form of capital punishment used in Australia

Electric Chair

Electric Chair

- America is the only country that can authorize the use of the elecric chair as a form of capital punishment and the only country that has used the electric chair

- 8 states of America can still authorize the electric chair, some of these being Florida, Kentucky and Virginia

- In America 158 executions have been conducted through using the electric chair since 1976

-The electric chair was not a form of capital punishment used in Australia

Lethal Injection

Lethal Injection

- 6 countries are currently using lethal injection as a form of capital punishment these include America, Thailand and China

- 33 states of America can authorize the use of lethal injection, some of these being Arizona, Kentucky and Texas

- In America 1237 executions have been conducted through using lethal injection since 1976

-Lethal injection was not a form of capital punishment used in Australia

- 21 countries are currently using hanging as a form of capital punishment these include America, Iraq and India

- 3 states of America can authorize the use of hanging, these are Delaware, New Hampshire and Washington

- In America 3 executions have been conducted through the use of hanging since 1976

- Hanging was a form of capital punishment used in Australia
