Nuclear Bombs

Nuclear

Bombs

  • Americans thought it would take over 20 years for any other country to develop nuclear weapons
  • The Soviets had a successful prototype bomb detonation in just 4 years after the Americans
  • When the U.S. investigated the found out that the Soviets had figured out how to build the bomb from information from spies
  • Many spies gave inforamtion to support communism others believed that no one nation should have the bombs so they helped the Soviets build their own

Nuclear Bombs

  • Many people feared that if one nuclear warhead was launched world destruction would follow

Nuclear Bombs

  • In response to the Soviet's new weapons the U.S. built even more powerful weapons such as the hydrogen bomb
  • The hydrogen bomb was 100 times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
  • With more and more powerful weapons being built the U.S. and the Soviets both wanted to make better unmanned weapons
  • The result were Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles or ICBM's
  • Instead of being dropped by airplanes like the bombs used against Japan the ICBM's would launch and be able to go far distances to destroy a target

The Space Race

Space

Race

  • During the Cold War the U.S. and the Soviets were trying to rove that their country was better than the other
  • The countries were both racing to be the first to the moon
  • The Soviets launched the first satellite, Sputnik, into space in 1957
  • In 1958 Americans launched their own satellite into earth's orbit
  • President Eisenhower aslo created NASA which was dedicated to space exploration
  • In 1959 the Soviets sent the first probe to the moon
  • In 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first man to orbit the Earth

Space Race

  • NASA had a budget of 23 billion dollars vs. the Soviet budget of 10.1 billion
  • The Space race was a competition between the U.S. and the Soviets to develop the best space technology
  • By the end of 1962 Project Apollo had been created to send man to the moon
  • In December of 1968 Apollo 8 was launched
  • On July 16, 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first person on the moon
  • The U.S. won the race by putting the first human on the moon

Long Range Bombers

  • Due to the military risk of the Soviet Union many andavnces in military technolgy were made including long range bombers
  • These bombers were the platform for modern day jet airliners

Other Technology

Created

Lasers

  • The first lasers were produced in 1960 bu the U.S.
  • They serve many purposes including targeting systems, medical use, and chemistry

Lasers

Team

Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles

  • Since the U.S. and The Soviet Union were so far apart they needed to develop long range weapons in the event of conflict
  • ICBMs were long range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads
  • The development of these missiles also contributed to the rockets used to go to space

Agent Orange

  • Agent Orange is a type of herbicide used in the Vietnam War to clear and kill forests and crops the enemy was using
  • The herbicide was laterproven to cause serious health issues

Agent Orange

Computers

  • Many advancements in computer were made during the cold war
  • Each side continued to make better and better computers used to provide surveillance on the opposing side

Computers

Long Range Communication

  • Long range calling helped connect people over long distances
  • It was used in war to direct troops

Long Range Calling

Early Internet

  • In the 1960s the U.S. government funded a project to share information between military computers quickly
  • This was the first use of the internet
