What was Bleeding Kansas?

Bleeding Kansas was a period of violent conflicts between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces in the new territory of Kansas from 1854 to 1859

  • The violence was triggered by the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed the residents of Kansas to decide whether to allow slavery or not under the principle of popular sovereignty.
