The Compromise of 1850

The compromise of 1850 was a set of laws set that dealt with slavery. California was allowed to join the free states but the fugitive slave act had to be put into place as to not upset the southerners.

Fugitive Slave Act

The Fugitive slave act required all people, from north and south, to turn in escaped slaves. This was disliked by the north but was a necessary evil to be able to have California admitted as a free state.

The underground railroad

The underground railroad was a system of houses, usually marked by a lantern on the porch, that helped slaves escape to the free north. Many slaves escaped to the north and even Canada though this "railroad" and received their freedom from it.

The Kansas Nebraska act

The Kansas Nebraska act allowed Kansas and Nebraska to choose weather they were a free or slave state. The Whigs were phased out and the Republicans were born due to this act.

Bleeding Kansas

Bleeding Kansas was a battle in mostly Kansas but also in a small part of Missouri. This battle or fight ultimately lead to Kansas being admitted to the Union as a free state.

The Lincoln-Douglass debates were 7 debates between, you called it, Abraham Lincoln, the republican candidate, and Stephen Douglas, the incumbent senator from Illinois.

The election of 1860 had 4 candidates up for election including Abe Lincoln, John C. Breckenridge, John Bell, and Stephen A. Douglas. Abe Lincoln won both the electoral college vote as well as the popular vote, but he had only 500,000 more votes than his democratic opponent Stephen A. Douglas.

The supreme court case of Dread Scott V. Sanford was a massive case because it found that the constitution was not intended to give American citizenship to Black people.

The raid at Harper's Ferry was an attack, that was meant to hopefully create a slave revolt, by an abolitionist named John Brown.

The Battle of fort Sumter

The Battle of fort Sumter was an attack on the US Army after South Carolina succeed from America and is considered by many as the first battle of the US Civil war. The US army eventually surrendered but then later came back with a much larger army in retaliation to the attacks.
