RED by Taylor Swift

Ryanah M.

Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street A

Faster than the wind passionate as sin Ending so suddenly A

Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you're already flying through the free-fall B

Like the colours in autumn, so bright Just before they lose it all B

Losing him was blue like I'd never known A

Missing him was dark grey, all alone A

Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met B

But loving him was red (re-e-e-ed, re-e-e-ed) (Re-e-e-ed, re-e-e-ed) B

Loving him was red (re-e-e-ed, re-e-e-ed) (Re-e-e-ed, re-e-e-ed) B

Touching him was like realising all you ever wanted was right there in front of you A

Memorising him was as easy as knowing all the words to your old favourite song B

Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realising there's no right answer C

Regretting him was like Wishing you never found out that love could be that strong D

External Rhyming

External rhyme is rhyme that occurs in the last words of each line in a poem. Because it is at the end of each line, it is also known as end rhyme.

External

"Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you're already flying through the free-FALL

Like the colours in autumn, so bright Just before they lose it ALL "

Slant Rhyming

A slant rhyme is a type of rhyme with words that have similar, but not identical sounds.

Slant

"Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never MET

But loving him was RED "

Literal Devices

Literacy

Device

SIMILE

"Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street,"

Simile

She phrased her comparison with the word "like." She used this to compare how their romance ended to driving a Maserati down a dead-end street to illustrate to listeners how fast it ended.

METAPHOR

"Loving him was red,"

Metaphor

She said, "Loving him was red," literally. It lacked the words "as" and "like." Red typically represents either passion or violence, and she is trying to convey that she and her partner had both in their relationship.

PERSONIFICATION

"Passionate as sin,"

Personification

Sin is not capable of experiencing passion because that is a human-only action. It is a simile as well. She did this because when you commit a crime or a sin, you are impassioned and think you are acting morally. She is so claiming that her romance was sinfully intense.

ALLITERATION

"Flying through the free fall,"

Alliteration

To have a more significant effect on the listeners, she picked terms that start with the letter "f." I believe she is stating how much she adored falling for him.

IMAGERY

"Like the colours in the autumn, so bright just before they lost it all"

Imagery

She created an image of what she felt or saw in the listeners' minds through imagery. This was her way of expressing how lovely and vibrant their relationship had been before it ended.

Because the emotions involved were so strong, some things are just difficult to forget, and for Taylor Swift, red represents an intense emotion.

Literal

Meaning

The central theme of this song is how a relationship that was so wonderful that it ended suddenly. This song portrays the sadness and regret that can result from witnessing how amazing love can be and then losing it. It also describes how difficult it is for the speaker to move on from her relationship.
