There is an elephant that is aware of its surroundings and this is representing the racial conflicts that are going on. People are only appreciated for what they appear to be on the outside and not their qualities on the inside.
The lines "And I told about equality and it's true
Either you're wrong or you're right
But, if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white" represents how he doesn't discriminate against a person based on the color of their skin. This is basically what your soul has to offer on the inside and not automatically assuming certain stereotype because of what you have heard from others.
This song represents personification. These lines, "When you give me the hummingbird heartbeat
Hummingbird heartbeat
You give me the hummingbird heartbeat
Spread my wings and make me fly"
The song is saying that the hummingbird is giving her a heartbeat which helps her live. This poem has been giving the elephant human-like qualities. The elephant is the speaker so the poem is in its perspective.
The phrase that keeps on getting repeated during the chorus is "We gon' be alright". It is just a chant for hope and freedom. Lamar says that the song is supposed to represent systematic oppression but on a deeper level. The elephant was talking about how its soul won't be cut in to because its skin is tough. This represent what African Americans have been going through so this is like a simile. Black peoples skin are as tough as an elephant's.
This song was chosen because the whole poem is about the elephant. The poem was written in 1st point of view to get a deeper understanding of what the elephant was trying to convey. There was a line that said "Life and death has been expressed by the circumference, Described by my, Trunk" This is referencing poaching most likely because elephants are killed to get the ivory from their trunks.
I chose this song because I think this describes the poem perfectly. The song talks about how the world is changing and you don't need to change the way that you are to fit in. Black people were never the standard of what a regular American was. They were always seen as outsiders or very inferior compared to the rest of the people in America.
