Fort Sumter

Let the War Begin!

The first battle of the Civil War started here on April 12th, 1861, by the Confederates.

And the War Begins!

The battle lasted a whole 34 hours. That's over the length of a full day!

Where am I?

Fort Sumter is located on a very tiny island located on the edge of Charleston, South Carolina.

Location

Fort Sumter was built to protect the Charleston Harbor.

The Building Process

Construction of the three-tiered, battle base started during the war of 1812.

Let the Building Begin!

Building came to a halt in the 1830's due to a dispute of ownership of the island.

The Building Process No.2

By 1841 the building process had started back up again.

Let the Building Continue!

In 1859 building started to slow again, but this time due to lack of funds.

By 1860 the fortifications were finished yet the inside was no where close to done.

The End of it All

After the long battle the Union eventually serendered.

The Aftermath

No one suffered any horrific injuries during the battle.

The fort was built after general Thomas Sumter.

Major Anderson commanded over 100 soldiers! That's alot!

It is still a Union unoccupied fort and is now a historical site.
