Basics

What are the different types of moon phases?

- New moon

- First Quarter moom

- Full moon

- Third Quarter moon

Different kinds

What is a full moon?

A full moon is when the moon appears to be fully illuminated from the earths current perspective.

Full moon

What is a third quarter?

This is a moon that occurs only once a month when everything lines up just right.

Third Quarter

What is a first quarter?

This happens when the moon is 90 degrees away from the sun.

First Quarter

What is a new moon

This is when the moon has moved 180 degrees from its position and the sun, Earth and the moon form a line.

New moon

What do these moon phases mean?

All of these moon phases are caused by positions of the Moon, Earth, and Sun.

Meaning

There are also four more secondary phases of the moon, these ones are not as well known but they consist of:

Secondary phases

What is waxing gibbous?

This is the phase between a half moon and a full moon.

Waxing Gibbous

Waxing Cresent

This is the first step to a full moon and means the moon is increasing in size. This leaves only a sliver of the moon visible to us.

Waxing Cresent

What is a waning gibbous?

This moon phase is between a full and first quarter moon.

Waning Gibbous

What is a waning cresent

The end of the moon phase cycle. This moon has already experienced every phase there is.

Waning Cresent

What is a lunar eclipse?

This occurs very rarley

when the moon moves

into the earths shadow.

Lunar Eclipses

What is a prenumeral lunar eclipse?

This occurs when the earths outer shadow falls on the face of the moon.

Prenumeral Eclipse

What is a total lunar

eclipse?

This occurs when a full moon comes between the sun and the earth, this blocks the direct sun from the moon.

Total Eclipse

What is a partial lunar eclipse?

This occurs when the earth comes between both the sun and moon but do not all form in a straight line.

Partial Eclipse

Moon Phase Activites

How does the moon cause tidal effects?

Both high tide and low tide are caused by the moon due to gravitational pull.

Tidal Effects

What is low tide?

This occurs when the ocean has reached its lowest point during the day.

Low Tide

What is gravitational

Pull?

This is the attraction that the earth exerts.

Gravitational Pull

All coral tends to time their spawning for the day around the gravitation pull of the earth.

What is high tide?

This occurs when the water has reached its highest point in the ocean.
