OBJECTIVES/VOCABULARY

Negative Exponents

Previously, you learned how to

  • Write equivalent expressions of monomials with zero and negative exponents.

Today, you will learn how to

  • Convert numbers written in scientific notation into standard form
  • Convert numbers written in standard form into scientific notation

New Vocabulary

Common Core State Standards

Content Standards

CCSS.Math Content.8.EE.4 -- Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology.

Mathematical Practices

1.) Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

3.) Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

4.) Model with mathematics.

7.) Look for and make use of structure.

INSTRUCTION

Scientific Notation

Scientific notation is when a number is written as the product of a factor and an integer power of 10. When the number is positive, the factor must be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10.

Independent Practice

Remember to respect everyone's grind by remaining silent as you work. The work is temporary, but the payoff is forever. A poor work ethic now leads to a poor paycheck later.

RECAP

3 - 2 -1 Lesson Recap

  • Record 3 things you learned today.
  • Record 2 things you found interesting.
  • Record 1 thing you're still unsure about.

Homework

  • Check Edmodo to review notes from today's lesson.
  • Update your glossaries.
  • Complete practice problems in your workbooks as needed based on what Mr. George's feels you need more practice on.
