The evolution of Guy Montag.

Guy Montag Evolution

Like the other firemen, Montag's pleasure in his life was burning books. Before Montag met Clarisse, he was described as having a "fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame." He believed he was happy with his everyday routine, the job he worked, and his marriage. When Montag grinned, it was an expression of power and ignorance rather than actual happiness.

Detachment

Curiosity

Montag wanted to find out what was wrong with society, he felt that reading books could help. Clarisse asks him if he's happy, he then feels "his smile slide away, melt, fold over and down on itself... he was not happy. He said the words to himself. He recognized this as the true state of affairs." When he gets home he sees Mildred unresponsive in her bed, he is confused why the hospital sent a machine instead of a doctor.

Recognizing

Montag starts to pay attention to his own emotional state and realizes that he is not happy. Mildred asks him why anyone would want to read books, Montag then points out several concerning events, Mildreds overdose on sleeping pills, the accident that killed Clarisse, the suicide of the women that wouldn't abandon her books, and the threat of nuclear war. All these events added to Montag's unhappiness
