WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

  • The current Air Force culture does not value fitness.

Part

I

We need to do more of this!

What is the Root Cause?

Root Cause

  • We have gotten away from the understanding that physical fitness is part of our readiness and part of the mission.

  • Physical wellness needs to be a part of a service members lifestyle.

Is the AFI Clear Enough?

AFI36-2905

  • AFI 36-2905 2.25.4. PT program requirements: unit PT programs will encourage Airmen to participate in physical fitness training for up to 90 minutes, 3-5 times per week. (T-1). Consistent with mission requirements, commanders are encouraged to schedule or authorize Airmen time to participate in physical fitness training during the duty day.

Our Position

CMSAF Wright

The member should value 365 day wellness and the unit will incorporate it as part of their mission.

AFH: 36-2618

Part

II

“I’d really like to encourage every airman to take your fitness and your health and your nutrition personal. It doesn’t matter if you’re a special operator, or if you’re an intel airman, or if you sit behind a computer in a comms squadron. We all need to, first and foremost, take responsibility for our fitness.”

4.5.3.2.Champion physical readiness. Lead the way by promoting, supporting, and participating in unit physical training activities and the Air Force fitness program. Incorporate physical training into the team’s duty schedules as the mission allows

PART III: Formulate a Solution

  • Well-crafted standards and expectations which incorporates fitness as part of the unit level mission

Part

III

  • Implement: sets standards, builds a culture for long term, initiator for change, culture shift on the mindset of fitness/wellness, leadership must “buy in”

LIMFAC

  • LIMFAC: Time/mission requirements
  • Effects: burnout of personnel due to longer hours

  • LIMFAC: Buy in from leadership (Top 3, SNCOs, Flight Chiefs, Section Chiefs, Supervisors) Effects: less mission requirements, more manning

• Positive Effects: higher productivity, effective mission accomplishment, improve wellness, healthier people, less failures, reduce anxiety and stress, better unit cohesion, more time for the unit member, less injuries, higher morale
