NCAI (1944)

National Congress of American Indians (NCAI)

Influenced by the African American campaign Native Americans created the NCAI, which was the first pan-Indian movement. The organization was successful in stopping the Eisenhower administration from ending reservations rights and it created a promise for more jobs and they had also used the courts to sue the state and federal government over discrimination at jobs and schools.

Red Power Movement (1960s)

It was a social movement led by the Native American youth all throughout the 1960s to demand self-determination for Native Americans in the US. Some organizations that were a part of this were the American Indian Movement and the National Indian Youth Council.

NIYC (1961)

National Indian Youth Council (NIYC)

This was a nonprofit organization whose efforts were focused on making sure there were activities and projects dedicated to attaining a greater future for the Native Americans. Creating more accessible access to the same equal educational benefits as others.

AIM (1968)

The American Indian Movement (AIM)

Organized to address the issues related to sovereignty, leadership and treaties. They were responsible for many trails such as: The trail of broken treaties(1972), the trail of self-determination (1976) and the trail of the longest walk (1978).

CILS (1970)

The Californian Indian Legal Service (CILS)

Were the first legal organized services that provided specialized legal representation to Native Americans. It protected and advance legal rights for many Native Americans. and they were able to build many buildings and expand their services.

Kennedy appointed Dr.Philleo Nash as head of the BIA. The BIA turned 56 reservations into 'redevelopment areas' that would receive government investment

In the Indian Resources Development Act, Native Americans were allowed to sell or mortgage their tribal land in order to raise money.

Indian Civil Rights Act (ICRA), also called the Indian Bill of Rights, guaranteed any civil rights that Native Americans had been fighting for. Also during this year Johnson proposed ending termination but it was not until 1988 that the House Concurrent Resolution 108 was formally abandoned.
